The 96th Oscars 2024 was a night to remember, as Oppenheimer, the biopic of the father of the atomic bomb, dominated the ceremony with 13 nominations and several wins, including best picture, best director, and best original screenplay.
Barbie, the musical comedy based on the iconic doll, was received major nominations, but only took home one trophy for best original song.
Another standout of the night was Poor Things, the dark comedy adaptation of the novel by Alasdair Gray, which won four awards in the technical categories, such as hair and makeup, production design, and costume design.
Emma Stone surprised many by winning best actress for her role in Poor Things, a dark comedy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. She beat Lily Gladstone, who made history as the first Native American acting nominee and winner for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, a crime drama based on a true story.
The star of the night, however, was Cillian Murphy, who delivered a stunning performance as Oppenheimer and completed a rare feat of winning all four major acting awards in the same year: the Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the SAG Award, and the Oscar.
