Lee Sung Jin, known for his work on the Netflix series “Beef,” has been tapped to write the script for Marvel’s highly anticipated film “Thunderbolts.”
In an interview, Lee revealed that he is currently rewriting the script, which was initially penned by Eric Pearson. He expressed his excitement about being part of the Marvel universe, saying,
“It’s truly an honor to be part of a Marvel thing, but it is very different. One, it’s not my project, it’s Jake’s. It’s such a large scope and scale that the type of writing is very different.”
Lee’s previous writing credits include “Tuca & Bertie,” “Dave,” and “Silicon Valley,” but “Thunderbolts” will be his first writing credit for a produced feature film. Despite the challenges, Lee is thrilled to be working with Schreier and the rest of the team once again. “Once you find the squad of people you love and trust and are so talented, you do everything you can to keep working with them,” he said.
The film will be directed by Jake Schreier, who also directed “Beef,” and will feature a star-studded cast, where Florence Pugh will play the role of Yelena Belova, the character of Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine will be played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan will play Bucky Barnes (commonly known as The Winter Soldier), David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. The dream team also includes Wyatt Russell as John Walker. Ayo Edebiri and Steven Yeun are also included in the cast but their roles are not disclosed yet.
Details about the plot of “Thunderbolts” are being kept under wraps, but we know that the film is based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name, which follows a group of antiheroes, carrying a mission assigned by the government. The movie will conclude Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be preceded by upcoming releases such as “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Captain America: New World Order,” “The Marvels,” “Deadpool 3,” and “Blade.”
“Thunderbolts” is scheduled to begin shooting in June 2023 and is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. While Marvel did not comment on the news, Lee is represented by WME and Grandview.
