Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have put the Barbenheimer rivalry behind them with a heartwarming hug.
At the premiere of “The Fall Guy” in Austin, Texas, last Tuesday, Ryan, 43, and Emily, 41, were seen being friendly and close. Ryan, who’s in the movie as Colt Seavers, was spotted in a cool red jacket with the film’s title on it, along with a casual white tee, denim jacket, and jeans.
Emily, playing Jody, looked stylish in a black-and-white sweater that was cut short and some trendy low-rise pants. They even shared a warm hug on stage during the event.
Emily Blunt & Ryan Gosling’s Hilarious Banter at the Oscars 2024
Gosling and Blunt previously discussed the Barbenheimer phenomenon while celebrating stunt performers at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday, March 10.
“I’m just happy we can finally put this Barbenheimer rivalry behind us,” Gosling said during the introduction.
“That’s right. Here’s Ken and Kitty just leaving all that fodder in the dust,” Blunt replied, referring to their characters in Barbie and Oppenheimer. “And the way this award season turned out, it wasn’t that much of a rivalry,” she joked. “So just let it go!”
“It’s true. You guys are doing very well,” Gosling admitted. “But you know, I think I kind of figured out why they called it Barbenheimer and why they didn’t call it Oppenbarbie … because you were riding Barbie’s coattails all summer.” (Barbie hit over $1 billion in the box office after its 2023 premiere, while Oppenheimer grossed over $900 million.)
“Thanks for Ken-splaining that to me, Mr. I-need-to-paint-my-abs-on-to-get-nominated,” Blunt quipped. “You don’t see Robert Downey doing that!” (Downey, 58, portrayed Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer and ultimately won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.)
Gosling then took the mic back from Blunt and exclaimed, “This is insane Emily! We gotta stop.” This had the audience laughing out loud.
Barbie and Oppenheimer competed for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, which Oppenheimer won, as well as Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
Ryan Gosling was nominated for his role in the supporting category, but Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig didn’t get any nominations for their work on Barbie. On the other hand, Emily Blunt was in the running for Best Supporting Actress, but Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home the award for her performance in The Holdovers.
What is Barbenheimer?
The nickname Barbenheimer came about because both movies were released on the same day in July 2023.
After the movies opened, AMC Theaters shared that more than 20,000 fans bought tickets to watch both films on their debut day. A week later, that number jumped to 40,000.
