For the fans of Peaky Blinders, we have the news of the day – Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is returning back as the iconic Tommy Shelby in the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie that is in the works.
It seems like this month all we’re talking about is Cillian Murphy… or Oppenheimer… or Tommy Shelby. This man has many personas, and he nails each one of them. This is why Tommy Shelby remains legendary, and his comeback is much awaited by fans worldwide.
Peaky Blinders’ Movie Shoot Begins in September
Steven Knight, the mastermind behind the much-loved series, spilled the beans at the debut of his latest BBC drama ‘The Town’ during a chat with Birmingham World. He excitedly confirmed that the much-anticipated movie is on the horizon, with Cillian Murphy set to reprise his iconic role. “He [Cillian Murphy] definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” Knight disclosed.
Cillian Murphy’s comeback as the notorious Tommy Shelby in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie doesn’t come as a shock. The ‘Oppenheimer’ actor has, on several occasions, voiced his eagerness to be part of the ‘Peaky Blinders’ cinematic venture, contingent on the script’s quality. He’s convinced there’s more of the story left to unfold, even after the show wrapped up.
A Year to Remember for Cillian Murphy!
Reflecting on the potential for a ‘Peaky Blinders’ film last year, Murphy shared his thoughts, saying, “If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it. But it has to be right. Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”
In a memorable exchange with Margot Robbie, a self-proclaimed ‘Peaky Blinders’ fan, during Variety’s Actors on Actors segment, the conversation naturally drifted to the series. “Can we please talk about Tommy fucking Shelby for just one minute?” Robbie excitedly asked. She talked about the likelihood of a spinoff film, to which Murphy responded, “I mean, I’m open to the idea. I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell.”
Cillian Murphy recently won the Academy Award for his unbeatable performance in Oppenheimer. Now, the Irish actor is set to return to screens as Tommy Shelby, a character loved and admired by audiences worldwide for his charisma.
‘Peaky Blinders’ first graced screens on BBC Two and later shifted to BBC One for its final seasons. The show reached extreme levels of popularity once it debuted on Netflix. Peaky Blinders concluded with its finale in April 2022, yet Knight has always been vocal about his vision to extend the narrative through a film, and now it’s finally happening.
