Beyoncé and her daughter Blue Ivy are once again coming together for an enchanting performance. After their memorable appearance together during Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, the dynamic mother-daughter pair is set to contribute their vocal talents to the highly anticipated prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King.
In this cinematic journey that precedes the events of the 2019 live-action adaptation of the beloved Disney classic, Beyoncé, at 42, reprises her role as Nala, Simba’s cherished companion. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Blue Ivy steps into the role of Kiara, the progeny of Nala and Simba.
Barry Jenkins on Beyoncé and Blue Ivy’s Collaboration
In a conversation with People Magazine, Barry Jenkins, the director of the upcoming film Mufasa: The Lion King, shared his insights on the unique casting of Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy.
Reflecting on their synergy, Jenkins expressed, “I thought there was something really lovely about having this mother and daughter get to play together, to work together.” He revealed that the production commenced “back in 2020 or 2021,” which coincided with Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour in 2023.
It was during this tour that Blue Ivy, Beyoncé’s eldest child with Jay-Z, made her debut alongside her mother. Jenkins observed, “I feel like Blue grew quite a bit over the course of that tour.” He views the film as a “snapshot, this time capsule of a moment in their lives that I think is really beautiful. And it absolutely worked for the film.”
Jenkins also commended Beyoncé for her maternal approach during the production. “Beyoncé is this larger-than-life figure, but when she’s working with her daughter, when she’s in the room with her daughter, she’s a mom first. So much of that energy bled into the film,” he shared, highlighting the heartfelt dynamic that contributed to the movie’s essence.
